Improv at the Academy: A Competition
Winning Community Theatre Group receives a $500.00 Prize

presented by: The Community Alliance for the Performing Arts in partnership with the Academy Art Museum

An exciting peek into the world of improvisation! Coached and directed by Joe Mayer.

Local theatre groups are invited to sponsor teams of four actors to participate in two workshop sessions studying, in-depth, the art of improvisation. Mr. Mayer will work with the actors on method and problem solving techniques, culminating in a live competition, open to the public, with a $500.00 donation offered to the winning community theatre group. Workshops for the competing actors will be held on Thursdays, January 31st and February 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the performing arts theatre.

Fee: $60.00 per team of four actors. Limited to five teams, accepted on a first come basis. Entry form below.

Improv at the Academy : A Competition will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public.

About Joe Mayer:

Joe Mayer received his BFA from William and Mary and his MFA from Catholic University. He has worked as the Art Department Chairman at Prince George's Community College and as an adjunct professor at University of Maryland, Sweet Briar College, West Virginia Wesleyan and Montgomery College. His works have been exhibited at numerous venues including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran Art Gallery, Catholic University, Gallery 54 in New York City, the Maryland State Capitol Building, Vierhoff Gallery of Washington, DC and Pinto Gallery of San Francisco. He has also served as the past president of the Washington Watercolor Society and Annapolis Watercolor Association. He's conducted private workshops in the United States, France and Mexico. He is the founder of the Friday Morning Artists in Shepherdstown, W Va. and Easton, Md.

Mr. Mayer is also an accomplished director, actor and theatre teacher. His favorite medium is improvisation as it is so effective in awakening the creative process; asking the actor to take chances and learning to think out-of-the-box.
